The MiG-29 Fulcrum is a tactical fighter jet built to replace the elder MiG-21 or the Su-15.
It has high motility and firing range beyond visible horizon in order to counter America's new F-15 or F-16.
The plane resembles the Su-27 but is a smaller type with less capacity for long distance dispatches and armament load.
In order to use it at airports close to the battle front line, its air intake is equipped with a grid preventing unwanted material to be sucked in, and closing automatically during takeoff and landing.
It was released in the Soviet Air Force in 1983, and afterwards export to allied countries was intensified.
In 1986 it visited Finland where its appearance details became clear, while in 1988 it was the main conversational topic during its exhibition at an air show in England.
With the aim of improving performance, a number of variants have been built. Until now close to 1300 airplanes have been constructed.
